Foods dangerous to pets

It is vital to be aware of foods that can be dangerous for our pets. When in doubt, it is always best to consult your vet before giving your pet anything new.

Chocolate

Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, substances that may be harmless to humans but can be highly toxic to dogs and cats. It can lead to serious health problems such as palpitations, vomiting, diarrhoea and even death in extreme cases.

Onions and garlic

Onions and garlic contain substances that can cause anaemia in pets. Even in small amounts, these ingredients can cause serious damage to red blood cells, resulting in weakness, vomiting, respiratory problems and other health complications.

Grapes and raisins

Although the exact reason is not yet fully understood, grapes and raisins are known to cause serious kidney problems in dogs. Even small amounts can cause vomiting, lethargy, decreased appetite and, in extreme cases, kidney failure.

Avocado

The pit, skin and leaves of avocados contain persin, which can cause problems in pets. Although the concentration of persin in the flesh is usually not high enough to be harmful, it is safer to avoid it altogether.

Xylitol

This sweetener is often found in chewing gum, sweets, toothpaste and some peanut butter products. Even small amounts of xylitol can cause a dramatic drop in blood sugar levels in dogs, resulting in possible liver failure and even death.

Caffeine

Like chocolate, caffeine can cause serious problems in pets, including excessive excitement, rapid heartbeat, tremors, vomiting and even seizures.

Alcohol

Any form of alcohol is toxic to pets. Even small amounts can cause vomiting, diarrhoea, coordination problems, breathing difficulties and, in severe cases, even coma or death.

A good rule to remember is that it is better to be safe than sorry. Avoiding these dangerous foods is a simple but important step. Especially to ensure that our beloved pets stay long, healthy and happy. By the way, did you know that in our convenience stores, you can also just buy foods for your pets that are definitely not dangerous? So stop by soon!
