A simple guide to making your own sushi

Sushi, a Japanese culinary art form, has captured hearts worldwide with its delicate flavours and aesthetic presentation. But did you know that you can also easily make these delicious treats at home? In this blog post, we share a simple guide that will help you start making your own delicious sushi. So put on your kitchen apron and discover the art of homemade sushi!

Step 1: collect the supplies

Before you start, make sure you have all the supplies on hand:

  • Sushi rice
  • Nori (seaweed leaves)
  • Rice vinegar
  • Sugar and salt
  • Fresh fish (salmon, tuna) or vegetables (avocado, cucumber)
  • Soy sauce
  • Wasabi and ginger (optional)
  • Bamboo mat (makisu) for rolling

Step 2: prepare the sushi rice

Wash the sushi rice thoroughly until the water runs clear and cook according to instructions. While the rice is still hot, mix it with a mixture of rice vinegar, sugar and salt. Let the rice cool to room temperature.

Step 3: cut the ingredients

Cut fresh fish or vegetables into thin strips. If you go for raw fish, make sure it is of high quality and suitable for sushi.

Step 4: preparing the sushi roll

Place a nori sheet on the bamboo mat with the rough side up. Moisten your hands to avoid sticking and spread a thin layer of sushi rice over the nori sheet, except for about 2 cm at the top.

Step 5: fill and roll

Place the strips of fish or vegetables in the middle of the rice. Use the bamboo mat to roll up the sushi tightly. Make sure the free edge of the nori sheet sticks well at the end.

Step 6: cut the rolls

Use a sharp knife that you regularly moisten to cut nice slices of your sushi roll. Cut the roll into about six to eight pieces.

Step 7: Serve with soy sauce and side dishes

Arrange your homemade sushi on a plate and serve with soy sauce, wasabi and ginger. Feel free to get creative with garnishes!

Additional tips for perfect sushi

  • Use fresh ingredients for the best taste.
