What do you eat best before you sport?

There are several things it is best not to eat before you sport, such as meat or full-fat yoghurts. However, we are happy to explain the best things to eat for a good workout! And most of these products you just buy in one of our shops!

Foods you can eat before your workout

Before you sport, it is best to eat proper and healthy food instead of sugary snacks. But how do you choose the right carbohydrates and the best food for exercise? We list some tips for you:

Three to four hours before your workout

On the one hand, your sporting performance is better when you eat something first and do not exercise on an empty stomach, but on the other hand, you obviously do not want to start your training with a digestive system in full working order. Studies show it is best to eat something about three to four hours before you start exercising. Fats are not digested until six to nine hours later, so it’s best to leave them out when a workout is on your schedule.

Carbs are key

When you exercise, be it running, playing football or any other sport, the muscles you use need carbohydrates and therefore food. As a result, it is best to choose products that are high in carbohydrates, starch and grains. Think rice, bread, pasta and the like. A plate of oatmeal is also a good option.

Fruit

If you have time to eat less than three to four hours before exercising, go for a mixture of (dried) fruit and nuts, possibly combined with fruit juice. These contain simple carbohydrates that are quickly absorbed by the body and thus give you quick energy. The best fruit is a banana, which is full of fibre and potassium and gives long-lasting energy. It also makes you less prone to dehydration.

However, it is important to note that you do not necessarily need to eat before exercising. Not hungry and still full from a previous meal? Then there is no reason to have a snack before working out.
