Homemade cinnamon buns

Cinnamon buns, also known as cinnamon rolls, are a delicious treat that are perfect for breakfast, brunch or as a snack. Making your own cinnamon buns is not only a fun activity, but the result is also irresistible. In this article, we will take you step by step through the process of making this sweet treat.

What do you need?

Ingredients

Dough
  • 500 g flour
  • 75 g sugar
  • 1 sachet (7 g) dry yeast
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 240 ml of milk
  • 75 g butter (melted)
  • 2 eggs
Filling
  • 100 g brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons of cinnamon
  • 50 g butter (at room temperature)
Glazing
  • 100 g icing sugar
  • 2 tablespoons of milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Preparing the dough

Let the dough rise. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, until it has doubled in volume.

Mix the dry ingredients. In a large bowl, mix the flour, sugar, yeast and salt.

Add the wet ingredients. Heat the milk until lukewarm (not hot!) and add it to the dry ingredients along with the melted butter and eggs. Mix everything well until you get a sticky dough.

Knead the dough. Dust your work surface with some flour and knead the dough for about 5-10 minutes until it is smooth and elastic. You can also use a stand mixer with a dough hook.

Make the filling

Prepare the butter. Make sure your butter is at room temperature so you can spread it easily.

Mix the filling. In a bowl, mix the brown sugar and cinnamon. Make sure it is well mixed.

Form the cinnamon buns

Cut the rolls. Cut the roll into 12 equal pieces. Place these cut side up in a greased baking tin.

Roll out the dough. After the dough has risen, press it flat on a floured surface. Roll it out into a rectangle of about 40×50 cm.

Spread the butter. Spread the room-temperature butter evenly over the dough.

Add the filling. Sprinkle the sugar-cinnamon mixture evenly over the greased butter.

Roll up the dough. Start on the long side of the rectangle and roll the dough tightly into a long cylinder.

Let the buns rise

Let the sliced cinnamon buns rise for another 30 minutes. They should increase in size again.

Baking

Bake the buns. Bake the cinnamon buns for 25-30 minutes, until golden brown. They should have a light and fluffy texture.

Preheat the oven. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).

Make the glaze

In a small bowl, mix the icing sugar, milk and vanilla extract until smooth. Add more milk or icing sugar for desired consistency.

Serve

Let the cinnamon buns cool slightly and drizzle the glaze over them before serving. Enjoy your homemade cinnamon buns with a cup of coffee or tea!

Tips for perfect cinnamon buns

Storage. You can store the buns in an airtight container. They will stay good for a few days, or you can freeze them for later use.

Use good ingredients. Quality makes a big difference, especially with butter and spices.

Experiment with flavours. Add nuts, sultanas or a little lemon zest for a surprising twist.

Homemade cinnamon buns are a true delight and the process is worth the effort. Whether you make them for yourself or to share, these soft, sweet and spicy rolls are sure to impress!
